There is no gift more precious than the gift of life itself, blood. With this work, Alicia Framis (Mataró, 1967) honors blood donors, the simple heroes of our society, whose giving saves lives.

 

Remix Buildings-Bloodsushibank is an architectural structure that replicates the processes of receiving and donating blood. Both processes refer to the most fundamental concept: life. Blood is usually donated in aseptic environments, apparently free of all contamination, but in the case of Framis' work, this depersonalized, hygienic space has been transformed into a cozy, comfortable setting steeped in an atmosphere of luxury. The work recreates an unlikely hospital room surrounded by padded walls and containing seats wrapped in white bandages, whose comfort encourages dialogue among waiting donors. The central area is a white, round platform where the blood donation and donor recovery takes place. Facing the platform is a sushi bar, which gives the act of donating blood a sense of delicacy and fragility and contrasts with the typical cold-cut sandwich provided after giving blood.

 

The work of Alicia Framis proposes new architectural models, where the concept of social participation takes on special meaning and routine human actions can be performed in a more humane mood and setting. We invite everyone in Madrid to practice the art of gift-giving in the facility. The blood will be taken to the Transfusion Center of the Region of Madrid and stored for future use.
